Director of Paramedic Education, at Pikes Peak Community College, Professor Kimberly Whitten-Chung let us know the benefits of using virtual patients in Emergency Medical Services curriculums.
Ms. Whitten-Chung starts by explaining to us the nuances between the different levels of Emergency Medical Services (EMR, EMT, AEMT, and Paramedics).
Although a relatively new practice to EMS education, virtual patients have been put into practice at Pike Peak Community College and have shown benefits as an active learning strategy, in the promotion of clinical reasoning, clinical judgment, and the ability to synthesize. Ms. Whitten-Chung also highlights the relevance of Body Interact virtual patients when it comes to learning from mistakes without harm being done to patients and how this learning strategy allows students to visualize and understand how their practice should change in the future, in order to overcome reasoning and decision-making mistakes.
